Galloway granny back on her bike after taking a tumble during charity ride

An 84-year-old Galloway granny is back on her bike after taking a tumble during a marathon charity ride.

Mavis Paterson is pedalling 1,000 miles round Scotland to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Research.

The dynamic octogenarian – who celebrates her 85th birthday next Wednesday – began her journey on April 29.

She took on the epic challenge in memory of her three adult children who have passed away since 2012.

Speaking from Findochty in Morayshire on Monday, Mavis, from Auchenmalg near Glenluce, reassured Twitter followers that all was okay.

She said: “Yesterday I had a nasty fall off my bike but today I’m back to normal.

“I’ve done 52 miles and I’m feeling really good and donations are still coming in for Macmillan Cancer Support.”

Raising a glass of her favourite tipple – a good red wine – she added: “I must say thank you to all my supporters. It’s been wonderful, cheers!”

Mavis expects her two-wheeled tour of Scotland to take around a month.

She’s had plenty of practice – in 2019 she became the oldest ever woman to cycle the entire length of Britain.

Numerous accolades include a Pride of Britain fundraiser of the year finalist and a Guinness Book of Records entry for becoming the oldest woman ever woman to pedal from Lands End to John o’ Groats.

She originally set herself a £30,000 target but quickly smashed that figure and the bar was raised to £55,000.

And as of Tuesday she was 92 per cent there with £51,107 in the kitty.

Mavis’ three adult children died four years apart – Sandy in 2012, Katie in 2013, and Bob in 2016.
