Gabriel Martinelli makes Arsenal title admission as major Champions League demand laid down

Arsenal starlet Gabriel Martinelli has said he hopes within two seasons, the Gunners could be challenging for the Premier League title. Mikel Arteta’s men are currently embroiled in a battle to secure a place in the top four.

The north Londoners currently hold a one-point advantage over fifth-placed Manchester United but have two games in hand in which they will certainly hope to extend that gap. The fact that Arsenal are in prime position for a Champions League return is remarkable considering the woeful start to the season that they endured.

Whilst most will certainly be happy with the Gunners’ progress this term, Martinelli is certainly not resting on his laurels and wants his side to be challenging for the top domestic prize in the seasons to come.

Speaking in an interview with the BBC, the Brazilian starlet said: “We are doing well this season, I hope, two, three seasons later, we can fight for the title.” Martinelli has credited current boss Mikel Arteta for Arsenal’s turnaround over the last eight months. Since being appointed as the club’s replacement for Unai Emery, the Spaniard has certainly put his faith in youth, whilst also demanding high standards of the current crop of players - an ideology that bodes well for the club and Martinelli himself.

“He’s [Arteta] a lovely guy. We have an intense team and I think it’s because of him. He wants us to win every single game,” the 20-year-old continued.

“It’s because it’s Arsenal. Arsenal always have really good players. We are young but I think we are doing well because of our mentality.”

Whilst the former Ituano forward endured a stuttering slow start to the season, he has now firmly reestablished himself in the current Arsenal side. He has five goals and four assists to his name in all competitions and revealed that he is aiming to emulate a number of Gunners icons.

He said: “Henry, everyone knows him and what he made for the club, he’s a legend. Wright as well, he texts me all the time, yeah these two were amazing.

“I hope I can win things like them.”
