Gabriel Martinelli breaks silence on Michael Oliver's red card decision in Arsenal win vs Wolves

Gabriel Martinelli has admitted that he was upset after receiving a red card during Arsenal's 1-0 win against Wolves.

The Gunners travelled to Molineux Stadium in desperate need of a win to get their top-four hopes back on track, with their last win coming against Norwich City on Boxing Day.

Mikel Arteta's men got off to a solid start as Brazilian centre-half Gabriel Magalhaes poked the ball into an empty net after Alexandre Lacazette got a touch ahead of Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

However, Gabriel's countryman, Martinelli, received his marching orders in the 69th minute when referee Michael Oliver decided to brandish the youngster two yellow cards for two fouls in one sequence, a controversial decision, according to former Premier League referee Mark Halsey.

The 20-year-old will miss the north Londoners match against Thomas Frank's Brentford at the Emirates Stadium next week and he took to social media to voice his frustrations.

Tweeting after the full-time whistle, he said: "I’m upset because it’s difficult to accept that as a red card.

"But I am proud the team fought to keep the result and the win."

Arsenal boss Arteta also claimed he had never seen a sending off like it, admitting that his side suffered in the dying embers of the game to secure all three points.

“I’ve never seen that,” he said after the match. "I’ve been 18 years in this country and I’ve never seen something like it.

“We made it even more difficult for ourselves playing with 10 men. We suffered a lot in the last 10 minutes. I’ve never seen something like it.

“We have to go game by game and there are small margins to win games. We have to keep improving. Our reality is the next game.”
