Gabriel appears to ignore Mikel Arteta advice after Arsenal boss gets 'angry'

Gabriel failed to learn his lesson against Crystal Palace following Mikel Arteta's outburst last month.

The Brazilian centre-half was at fault for both goals Arsenal conceded in the first half at Selhurst Park as they found themselves 2-0 down at the break. Wilfried Zaha's penalty would secure a 3-0 win for the hosts, a damaging setback for the Gunners in their race with Tottenham to finish in the top four.

The north Londoners were all over the place defensively as Nuno Tavares replaced the injured Keiran Tierney at left-back. Jean-Philippe Mateta opened the scoring for Patrick Viera's men from a set-piece before Jordan Ayew gave Palace a two-goal cushion. And Gabriel didn't cover himself in glory for either goal.

Arsenal failed to deal with a free-kick as Gabriel misjudged the flight of the ball before it fell in the path of Mateta who headed home the opener. There was then another mix-up between him and Tavares for Palace's second goal as Gabriel was unable to cut out the hosts' through ball.

The 24-year-old committed himself lunging to the ground to make the interception, but missed the ball entirely. Ayew anticipated Gabriel's mistake - something which Tavares didn't do - as the striker placed a low strike past Aaron Ramsdale to make it 2-0.

Arteta was visibly frustrated on the sidelines and wasn't best pleased with the defender which has been a common theme in recent weeks. The Spaniard was allegedly angry with the defender during Arsenal's 3-2 win over Watford as they struggled to see out the game with ease.

Arteta had grievances with Gabriel, Martin Odegaard and Granit Xhaka when Bukayo Saka gave them a 2-1 lead in the first half as he could be seen shouting at the trio. Gabriel held his hands up in the wake of the match against the Hornets insisting he must do better. He tweeted: "I just have to prove to myself what I'm capable of!"

Jamie Carragher and Wayne Rooney were in agreement that Gabriel was at fault for Mateta's goal. The Derby County boss said: "I think Arsenal initially have a good line, the way in which they have set up, you know that the ball is going to go to the back post.

"I think they are set and ready, but if you watch Gabriel, he has always got a clear view of the ball, he can see the ball all the way and then he takes a little step, he gets underneath the ball and then he can't get a full contact on it. It is a bit fortunate the way the ball bounces in the box but Gabriel has to do better."

Carragher added: "It is a big mistake from Gabriel in that position. If you look it takes a little touch from (Joachim) Andersen but look at Mateta's face. Come to Daddy! You must get those feelings when you know you are going to score and he couldn't believe his luck."
