Gabby Logan left speechless amid European Championships medal chaos after technical error

Gabby Logan and Steve Cram were left filling dead air live on BBC in front of millions of viewers as Saturday night's medal ceremony at the European Championships descended into chaos.

The tournament ended on a bright note for Team GB as they collected the gold medal in the men's 4x400m race, only for everything to go wrong in the medal ceremony.

The three medal-winning teams stepped up to the podium to collect the reward for their efforts, and were seen visibly confused as they were met with silence instead of the national anthem. While the runners for TeamGB were expecting God Save The Queen, the anthem wasn't played.

It was expected that the error would be rectified and the anthem would quickly start playing as the athletes stood on the podium, but that didn't happen. Instead, fans in attendance were asked to perform a Mexican wave instead, as a technical issue meant the anthems were unable to be played.

The incident left Logan rather red-faced as she and former distance runner Steve were forced to fill dead air and act as if nothing out of the ordinary was going on. Cram said: "Plenty of British fans here to enjoy the national anthem again. We're just waiting, the music cut out, their build-up music cut out quite abruptly."

Fans then started clapping in anticipation, as all the athletes on the podium appeared to be unsure of what to do to fill the time. The runners were seen looking around in confusion before the fans were asked to applaud, with officials explaining they were unable to play the anthem.

Cram, clearly perplexed at what was happening, passed the coverage back to Logan, who was in the studio, saying: "Hopefully they'll get their chance with the National Anthem later on tonight, who knows?"

But Logan was just as confused, and joked: "Talk about milking the moment. Very un-German like, the precision engineering or whatever equipment has failed them there. Bit disappointed there wasn't an Alexa or something, or a phone, or something they could use to enjoy the moment. Hopefully they're enjoying the attention anyway."
