Gabby Agbonlahor insists Celtic have set the Champions League bar for Rangers after having a go at Real Madrid.
Ange Postecoglou ’s team were unfortunate not to go in ahead at the break against the reigning European champions. They had the better first-half chances and were inches away from a stunning opener when Callum McGregor hit the inside of the post after connecting sweetly with Giorgos Giakoumakis’ lay-off. They were made to rue those missed opportunities when Real stepped it up after the break and ran out 3-0 winners.
Tonight, it's Rangers’ turn as they take on Ajax in Amsterdam. Gio van Bronckhorst’s men have been licking their wounds since the weekend when Celtic showed the ruthlessness that was lacking on Tuesday night, netting three first half goals in a 4-0 demolition of their rivals in the first derby clash of the season. A reaction will be demanded when they kick-off their group stage campaign.
And Agbonlahor wants to see them follow their rivals’ lead by attacking their opponents. Ajax aren’t on Real Madrid’s level but still represent a stern test for the Europa League finalists. But the former Aston Villa striker has urged the Light Blues to take the game to the Dutch Champions after booking their spot at this stage by beating Eredivise rivals PSV.
“This is what I want to see from Rangers and Celtic in the Champions League,” Agbonlahor told TalkSport. “The fans don’t want to see you park the bus against Real Madrid, sit in and try and nick a 1-1 or a 0-0. Have a go.
“Celtic did well. The money difference between Celtic and Rangers and the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona means they shouldn’t be getting a result against them. Celtic fans will be proud of their team and I’m sure tonight, Rangers will have a good go against Ajax.”
