Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Manchester City should loan Kalvin Phillips back to Leeds United after another evening of limited minutes. Phillips came off the bench in stoppage time as City came back from a goal down to beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old has played just 14 minutes of action since his move from Leeds in the summer, though that is partly down to a couple of minor injury issues he has picked up. With the World Cup starting in just under two months’ time, Phillips will be keen to be handed more consistent minutes on the pitch to ensure he does not lose his place in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI.
Writing on his Twitter after the game, Agbonlahor said: “Shame to see Kalvin Phillips getting 1 minute of playing time. Can’t they loan him back to Leeds for the season?”

Of course, with the transfer window now shut there is no possibility of Phillips returning on loan before the World Cup. Phillips will also have enough confidence in his ability to know that consistent minutes will begin to arrive soon given the congested nature of the fixture list in the coming weeks ahead of the World Cup.
He has clearly not forgotten about his roots, though, as his post-match Instagram story proved last night. Phillips wrote: “Yorkshire boys coming through with the goals @johnstonesofficial and @erling.haaland. Unreal comeback.”
