At about 3:00am on Tuesday police were despatched to an address in Main Street, Ulverstone, after a triple-0 caller reported a "prowler" was in the house.

The female caller was still on the phone when officers entered the house, to find Gabbie Marshall, who had been fatally stabbed.

Police said Ms Marshall was visiting her friend, who was living at the address with two children, aged two and three.

On Wednesday, Ms Marshall's older brother, Casey McCarthy, said his sister had only been in Tasmania for a couple of weeks for a fresh start.

"As we are all still very lost and in disbelief from it all, it's very hard to express exactly how we are all feeling at this stage," he said.

Mr McCarthy said his sister's daughter "doesn't fully understand what has happened".

"We are all just going to do our best to keep her on the right path through life knowing her mum is with her every step of the way."

Tasmania Police has urged anyone who may have information about the incident to call 131 444.
