GAA fans hit out at missed opportunity to hold All-Ireland quarter-finals in Páirc Uí Chaoimh instead of Croke Park

Confirmation from the GAA that the All-Ireland football quarter-finals will as usual take place in Croke Park has been met with frustration by supporters from all over the country.

The inability of games to generate even a half-full Croker is becoming more and more of an issue for the GAA as it undeniably worsens what are supposed to be showpiece games as spectacles.

One need only look at the weekend just gone when despite the customary double-header being utilised, the atmosphere was non-existent for large swathes of Mayo vs Kildare and in particular the opening qualifier tie between Clare and Roscommon.

With the cost of living crisis exacerbated in Dublin, it's becoming tougher and tougher for fans who do not live in the capital to support their team as hotel prices have surged to barely believable levels.

Combine this with the fact that Munster boast more teams remaining in the draw than any other province and one can see why there were calls to change the venue for the next round with Cork's Páirc Uí Chaoimh touted as a possible alternative.

Kerry legend Darran O'Sullivan was among those to do so.

He tweeted: "Wouldn’t a double header in Páirc Uí Chaoimh be incredible. Kerry Vs Mayo & Cork Vs Dublin. A full house in a brilliant new stadium that would be rocking."

While there were of course objections from those based in Derry, Armagh and Mayo, it would have at least eased the burden on Cork, Kerry and Clare followers.

And Dublin fans tend to really embrace the rare, rare occasions where they play down the country so you get the feeling they would have preferred a more competitive game in hostile territory rather than another sleepy stroll to victory at home.

One fan summed it up by saying: "The GAA had an opportunity here to change it up and give us exciting atmospheres at smaller venues but didn’t. Still will be an exciting weekend of sport."

While another person wrote: "Did the powers that be in the GAA not see how few people were in Croker on Sat?

"Whats the point in pumping millions into lots county grounds when they are never full?

"Imagine Ennis for example for Kerry Mayo…the place would be packed..super atmosphere, no doubt….or Cavan for Galway v Armagh…crazy decision."
