During the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Bari, Italy, leaders are addressing critical topics such as migration, financial support for Ukraine, the war in Gaza, artificial intelligence, climate change, and China's industrial policy. Migration, in particular, is a significant concern for Italy, as it serves as a major entry point into the European Union for individuals fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni has emphasized the need for increased investment in African nations to alleviate migratory pressures on Europe. She has also implemented initiatives like the 'Mattei Plan' to boost economic opportunities in Africa and discourage migration to Europe.

Despite efforts to curb migration, more than 22,000 people have arrived in Italy by sea in 2024, with over 157,000 arrivals and nearly 2,000 deaths or disappearances in 2023. The United States is also grappling with a surge in migrants at its southern border, prompting President Joe Biden to introduce new policies.

European Council President Charles Michel highlighted the importance of combating human trafficking and criminal groups that exploit vulnerable individuals for profit. The summit aims to establish a coalition to address these challenges collectively.

Notably, the summit has invited African leaders and other prominent figures like Pope Francis to discuss various issues, including migration and artificial intelligence. The gathering opened with a strong show of support for Ukraine, with agreements reached on financial aid and security measures.

However, divisions emerged among G7 leaders, particularly regarding the absence of a reference to abortion in the summit's draft document. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed disappointment over this omission, emphasizing the importance of women's rights and gender equality.

While differing views exist on certain issues, the G7 summit serves as a platform for global leaders to address pressing challenges and work towards collective solutions.
