With a condensed TV season resulting in fewer overall entries, this year's Emmy nominations are expected to be less controversial. FX has reason to celebrate with an impressive 93 nominations, including 25 for “Shogun” and 23 for “The Bear.”
The nominations have brought well-deserved recognition to critical darlings like FX's “Reservation Dogs” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” as well as introduced fresh competition, such as “Shogun” stars Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada.
Notable milestones include Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis becoming the first female Indigenous actors to receive Emmy nominations, with Gladstone recognized for “Under the Bridge” and Reis for “True Detective: Night Country.” Additionally, “Reservation Dogs” earned a nomination for best comedy series in its final season, with D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai from the show competing for lead actor in a comedy.
The Emmy Awards ceremony is scheduled for September 15 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on ABC.
Other highlights, snubs, and surprises from the Emmy nominations include:
Competition for HBO: Without powerhouse shows like “Succession” or “The White Lotus,” HBO's nomination count was surpassed by Netflix and FX. Netflix leads with 107 nominations for programs like “Baby Reindeer” and “Ripley,” while HBO secured 91 nods. Apple TV+ also performed well with 70 nominations, despite the absence of “Ted Lasso.”
Justice for Selena: Selena Gomez received her first Emmy nomination for best actress in Hulu's “Only Murders in the Building,” alongside co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short.
“The Morning Show” wakes up Emmy voters: Apple TV+'s “The Morning Show” earned its first Emmy nomination for outstanding drama with its third season, addressing current events like corporate hacking and the January 6 insurrection.
Emmy nods and a snub for Oscar winners: While Emma Stone was overlooked for her role in Showtime's “The Curse,” other recent Oscar winners like Robert Downey, Jr. and Da'Vine Joy Randolph received Emmy nominations.
2 out of 3 Queen Elizabeths get a nomination: Claire Foy and Olivia Colman, who both portrayed Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown,” received Emmy nominations, with Foy recognized for a guest appearance and Staunton nominated for best actress.
