Future ‘looking bright’ for Dundee’s Le Freak Records with DJ sets and gigs planned

The latest of Dundee Live’s interviews with the city’s independent record bosses sees us chatting with the folk over at Le Freak Records.

The ‘bright and bonkers' shop was opened by Tom and Jack Le Feuvre on the Perth Road in November 2017.

The ambitious siblings had both recently graduated from university but were stuck in dead-end bar jobs.

They decided to take the leap to start our own business and haven't looked back.

Tom has a background in design and graphics while Jack has some experience in the independent record scene.

Tom told us: “Our tastes are pretty different most of the time which means we stock a wide spectrum of wax.

“Jack is right into his funk and soul, disco, indie, afro and softer electronic stuff, whereas I'm well into House, Techno and the harder/weirder side of electronic music.

“That's not to say our tastes don't overlap a fair bit though."

Talking about how business is at the moment he explained: “The used vinyl market seems to be as strong as it ever has been since we opened with the demand in the shop always fairly steady.

“The online market is especially good for us as we sell all over the world through discogs with some records going for prices you wouldn't believe.”

Tom also said he was delighted that there’s now some light at the end of the cover tunnel.

He explained: “We're just pleased that this is hopefully the end of restrictions now as I'm not gonna lie, they've been a total pain in the neck for us as our shop is so small.

“The future is definitely looking brighter though as now we'll be able to put events on in the shop again which is something we've sorely missed.

“We have our own wee dj booth so before covid having DJs come play sets on the weekends was a regular occurence, we even occasionally squeeze bands in for a gig as well.”

- Catch up with ‘Le Freak & Friends’ at their monthly gigs in Beat Generator and also DJ sets at the George Orwell pub on the Perth Road.
