Fury at broken glass left at 'lovely' Arnold park 'popular with childminders'

Parents, dog walkers and visitors at King George V Recreation Ground, Arnold, are furious at broken glass and litter being left over the park. Broken glass was left all over the football pitch on the park over the weekend and, according to park goers a lot of glass was reported on the skate ramp and grass last week.

One parent who spoke to Nottinghamshire Live, said she has stopped her young son from going on the slide after previously seeing glass on it. Rebecca Thomson, who is 39 and a nurse, said: ““I saw the glass a few weeks ago. It was in the slide - that is where I saw it. I stopped him from going on the bigger slide. I can’t see what’s in it. It’s the same at the helicopter park.

The concerned mum from Mapperley added: “There’s always people here, I don’t come here often. There’s a lot of childminders here. It is well used. That’s always a problem - it’s not nice, it’s ruining a nice area.”

Jane Herkes, 66, often walks her dog Ozzy in the park. She says it’s a lovely park despite the ‘mess’ that people can leave it in. Jane said: “I don’t think there's enough bins for a start - people don’t use them anyway or they cram them.

“When the weather's nice it’s left in a right mess - plastic bottles, broken glass. I came here once and there were dirty nappies and stuff, they left the rubbish there. People go to the bin to put dog poo in and drop it to the side. It is a lovely park, especially when the weather is nice.”

Emma Dube, a carer, from Carlton, told Nottinghamshire Live that some people are careless towards the park. The 56-year-old said: “It’s only when people come to mess up. If we bring a picnic we clean after ourselves. There's always somewhere to place rubbish. Some people are just dirty, people just don’t care. They trash the place and don’t care.”

The leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke MBE, said that great pride is taken in parks and open spaces.

"We welcome visitors to come use them and enjoy these facilities all across the borough," he said. "We have a number of bins at all of our parks and each site is inspected, cleaned and has bins emptied on a daily basis by our parks teams as well as being regularly patrolled by our Neighbourhood Wardens.

"These spaces are for everyone in our community to enjoy, so it’s disappointing that some people choose not to dispose of their waste correctly and potentially even cause a danger to other park users. If a danger is reported at any of our parks, this is treated as a priority and investigated as soon as possible.

"I’d urge everyone to be considerate of other park users, the environment, and local wildlife when using these facilities and to please use the bins provided or take your waste away with you to keep these areas clean and safe for everyone. Thank you to all our visitors who use and take care of these facilities.”
