Furious Stapleford man slams E.ON over 'appalling' job leaves him having to fix home himself

A furious Stapleford man has slammed E.ON after an 'appalling' job on his home left him having to fix it himself. Richard Dodsley applied for a grant with the utilities company to have the home painted, guttering fixed and make improvements to his kitchen and bathroom.

But the 34-year-old was unimpressed by the job, claiming a Wi-Fi cable had been ripped out with nails, screws and debris scattered across his garden. Mr Dodsley, who lives in Moorbridge Lane, said that he refused to sign the job off due to the 'unfinished' work, instead choosing to finish some of the jobs himself despite a hand injury that has left him currently unable to work in his job at Iceland.

He also said that the paint job that was carried out was not done in the colour that he asked for. Mr Dodsley said: "It started when we applied for a grant for the insulation to be done on the exterior of the house. They went ahead and put the scaffolding up but then came and took it all down and said they ran out of funding.

"So fair enough and then the grant came back about three months later and they came back and started the job again. They came back and done a lot of it properly - the roof extension itself and the exterior not too bad. Overall it looks nice but then we start getting into the problems.

The guttering was left incomplete (Richard Dodsley)

"There's bits of rendering still not done. They gave us a choice of colour, we wanted the grey but they painted it like an off-white - I know it's free but why give us the choice of colour if you're not going to honour that?

"The paint job is appalling. The finish round the edges is appalling. We were promised extractor fans In the kitchen and bathroom, they've not been done. Triple vents in the windows, not been done.

"When they took the scaffolding down - this is where it gets interesting. They took it down and left, I'd gone to pick my son up in the morning, it was up, when I come back all I had was problems. They ripped the WiFi cable off the wall and tried to connect it themselves. Also the guttering was hanging off the wall, literally not connected in two different parts.

"So I got on the phone straight away to the area manager of the job and he said he'd get someone out to fix the guttering. At this point I was fuming and just said 'yeah, fine' because I knew the job would be done properly if I got it done. So I took care of that and it's not my job to be sorting problems out that they done. Then a bloke came out the same day to sign the job off. I blatantly refused to sign the job off because there's stuff inside the house that they said they were going to do that's not been done.

"And also the mess they'd left in the back garden, in the driveway, was absolutely ridiculous. I had my son and we've got a pet cat - there was nails, screws, it was everywhere all over the garden, all over the driveway."

Mr Dodsley said that he was worried about his son's safety after the debris was left in his garden. E.ON has since apologised for the work that they did and vowed to revisit the property to complete the outstanding work.

An E.ON spokesperson said: “E.ON is working with more than a dozen local authorities across the country under the government-funded Green Homes Grants scheme to improve more than 4,000 homes and save households around £23 million over their lifetime. Beneficiaries of these schemes gain more energy efficient homes as a result of their external wall insulation, saving them money on their energy bills now and in the future.

"We have visited Mr Dodsley this week to discuss his concerns about the work carried out on our behalf at his home. We have apologised and paid for the accidental damage to his internet cable. We have also arranged to revisit him next week to complete the outstanding work to his paintwork and ventilation.”
