Furious Coca-Cola fans left with 'flat Coke' after 'horrible' update

Coca-Cola fans have voiced their frustrations over a change to the design of their bottle lids. Last year the company announced plans to introduce a new cap for plastic bottles of Coke, Coke Zero, Diet Coke, Fanta, Sprite Dr Pepper and Lilt.

The new 'attached' caps are designed to remain on the bottle after being opened to help prevent litter and make the bottle more recyclable.

According to Coca-Cola, despite their bottles being 100% recyclable, the lids have often been thrown away and littered. The company say they hoped the move creates “circular economy” for plastic, in their efforts to become more sustainable.

Coca-Cola was the first major soft drinks company to announce their new design in Great Britain but not everyone is a fan. Consumers have taken to social media to air out their grievances about the new design with some people saying they have been left with cuts to their hand.

Twitter user May Queen tweeted a photo of their opened Diet Coke with the silver cap still attached writing: "This is the actual worst thing about modern Britain". The tweet which has been viewed by millions and retweeted by almost 1,500 times was met with responses from other users who agreed with her damning assessment of the new design.

Another twitter user mentioned the soft drinks company and said: "@CocaCola_GB yo, what's with these new lids? They never open properly, and when you finally do get it open it cuts the hell outta your hands each time you open or close the bottle again as the tether becomes really sharp/pointy."

While a third consumer tweeted the company and said: "@CocaCola_GB stop it with the lids fused together I sick of slicing my hand every time I open my bottle. Just bring the old lid back already."

Another drinker said: "Hey @CocaCola_GB. Your new bottle screw lids are horrible. Hard to screw back up which leads to leaks and flat coke. Why have you made them worse than they used to be?"

Despite the negative response from some customers, the new cap design is expected to be rolled out to all plastic bottles from Coca-Cola Great Britain by 2024. A spokesperson told the Daily Record: "Coca-Cola’s new attached caps are designed to prevent litter, and make collection and recycling easier by keeping all parts of the bottle together.

"Extensive research went into the new design to ensure consumers continue to have a positive experience when enjoying our drinks. When opening and closing the bottle, we advise consumers to not remove the cap from the bottle neck, or twist or bend the tab in a way that could compromise or damage the closure."
