Funerals cancelled on Monday as the nation comes to standstill to honour the Queen

Funerals across the country have been cancelled next week as a show of respect for the Queen's funeral - which will be taking place on Monday 19 September.

While there is no obligation for organisers to cancel planned events during the bank holiday period, many have done so.

As well as funerals being cancelled, schools, most businesses, shops and GPs are also expected to close next Monday.

However, the decision to cancel funerals has been slammed by the public, with many already having been "arranged many weeks ago".

People have taken to Twitter to share their grievances and heartbreak regarding this decision.

One person wrote: "No one can be buried (or cremated) on Monday 19th September except for the Queen," to which another confirmed that this is true, saying "My family have had a funeral cancelled for that day. They’ve been told no funerals ever go ahead on a Bank Holiday".

Another explained that many funerals taking place on September 19 will be moved to a different date. They said: "Although work is still ongoing, some funerals will go ahead, others are moving to a different date - led by the needs & wishes of the bereaved families involved."

They also added: "Most funeral services booked for 19 September will have been arranged many weeks ago, so funeral directors and cemeteries/crematoria are working with families to find the best approach for each one."

A third has claimed the disruption "caused on Monday will be huge", adding that if this bank holiday was planned at a different date, cancellations "wouldn’t normally happen".

They said: "Just listening on LBC @mrjamesob to a woman who’s mother’s funeral on Monday has been cancelled. They have relatives flying from the US, have arranged the wake, flowers, cars etc. There must be hundreds, if not thousands of funerals scheduled for Monday. All will be cancelled…

"…I assume those with surgery scheduled for Monday will also find it’s been cancelled. This wouldn’t normally happen on a public holiday because they are known in advance. The disruption caused on Monday will be huge."

And despite many funerals being rearranged, people have slammed the decision as inconsiderate and unfair to bereaved families who have taken time to gather the family and prepare for the funeral.

One wrote: "There’s no reason why any funeral should be cancelled."

While another angrily said: "Having been through the experience of having to rearrange a funeral numerous times during the first lockdown the emotional/psychological strain this can put on relatives really isn't fair, nor safe."

And a third said: "Families should not be pressured in any way to reschedule, only if they choose to should they be."

The Queen will ultimately be laid to rest within St. George's Chapel, in the grounds of Windsor Castle, alongside her husband, Prince Philip - who died in April last year.

The State Funeral of Her Majesty will take place at Westminster Abbey on Monday 19th September, where the Coffin will travel to Windsor Castle.

Once there, it will travel in Procession to St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle via the Long Walk.
