The funeral service for renowned Nottingham businessman George Akins Snr has been held. The Rock City founder died aged 94 on March 30, bringing an end to a colourful life.
More than 100 people attended an open funeral service for Mr Akins at St Mary's Church in the Lace Market at 12pm on Friday, April 28. All three of his sons spoke at the hour-long service.
George Jnr recited a Rudyard Kipling poem before Alex performed a rendition of 'I Wish You Love'. Sean read the eulogy, in which he described Mr Akins as a "local legend".

"He wasn't interested in living in past successes, it was always about the 'zig' and moving onto the next opportunity," he said. Sean compared his dad to Father Christmas, recalling a time he brought back a life-sized cuddly gorilla toy from one business trip.
"You wouldn't see him much during the week whilst he was working but when he came back he lit the place up," he continued. "He instilled a competitive streak and scepticism in us.
"He was a gambler, he went all-in on horses and businesses, he won and lost fortunes. He leaves a lasting legacy in this city. He was the most colourful of characters, irreverent, fearless and irrepressible.
Holding back tears, Sean added: "He truly was a maverick, an original. He will be very much missed."
Mr Akins launched Geo Akins bookmakers, a pioneering company in the betting industry that developed in the 50’s and 60’s. His casinos included the Victoria Club and the Park Side Club, two premises that became iconic in Nottingham.
