Funeral arrangements announced for beloved Dublin City University professor Dr Vicky Conway

The funeral arrangements have been announced for beloved Dublin City University professor Dr Vicky Conway.

Dr Conway, an associate professor at the Glasnevin university's School of Law and Government and an expert in policing, passed away at her home on Tuesday. Her funeral mass is set to take place on Friday in her home county of Cork.

On Wednesday, tributes poured in for the "wonderful, wise and kind" professor with a spokesperson for DCU's department of Law and Government saying: "We are terribly sad to have to share the passing of our colleague Vicky Conway. She was a wonderful person, wise and kind, and we will miss her."

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at DCU also expressed their condolences. A spokesperson said: "From across the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences we extend our sincere and deepest condolences to the family and friends of our dear colleague Vicky Conway, who will be sadly missed by all of us here at DCU and by all of her students. RIP."

A notice published on RIP.ie reads: "The death has occurred of Dr Vicky Conway (Dublin and Douglas Cork), on July 19 2022, unexpectedly, at home. Dr Vicky, loving daughter of Jean and the late Rory, beloved sister of Dermot, Susan, Bryan and Craig. Sadly missed by her loving mother and family, sisters-in-law Amy, Esther and Megan, Frank, her "niblings" Chara, Rory, Alex, Cian, Julie, Lauren, Sam, Daniel, Leo and Seb, relatives, esteemed colleagues, beloved friends and her much loved pet Fionn.

"Reposing in Temple Hill Funeral Home, Boreenmanna Road of Jerh. O'Connor Ltd on Friday July 22 from 8:45am to 11am which can be viewed on www.condolences.ie. Followed by a private cremation."

"Family flowers only, donations in lieu to Irish Council of Civil Liberties. Rest in Peace and Power."

Dr Conway joined DCU in July 2015 after having worked in the University of Kent, Queen's University Belfast, the University of Limerick, and the University of Leeds. She was made Associate Professor of Law in 2017 and was the School's first Convenor of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion.

Dr Conway also started a successful podcast in 2020 called Policed in Ireland that explored experiences people have with law enforcement. She was a leading researcher on policing in Ireland with a focus on the intersection between social change, police culture and police accountability.

Meanwhile, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris also paid tribute to Dr Conway, saying that she made a "significant contribution" to policing here in Ireland and in the UK. He said in a statement: "An Garda Síochána is saddened to learn of the death of Dr Vicky Conway. Dr Conway made a significant contribution to policing here and in the UK through her academic research, publications and lectures, as well as her membership of both the Policing Authority and the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland.

"Vicky’s passion for human rights-focused policing was evident in all her engagements with myself and my Garda colleagues. She was a strong and dedicated advocate for vulnerable members of society and minority communities.

"An Garda Síochána sends its condolences to Vicky’s family and friends."
