A fundraising dinner in Perth raised more than £6000 to aid areas devastated by mass floods in Pakistan.
Last month the Middle Eastern country declared a state of emergency when around one third of the nation became submerged under water, affecting 33 million people.
Pakistan officials estimate that the disaster has killed more than 1500 people since it first began in June, leading to the loss of over $40 billion.
The tragic deluge was caused by heavier than usual monsoon rains and melting glaciers that followed a severe heatwave.
It is the world’s deadliest flood since the 2017 South Asian floods and described as the worst in the country’s history.
On September 14 MP for Perth and North Perthshire Pete Wishart attended the fundraising meal at Manzil restaurant in Perth when the incredible sum was raised.
Attendees paid £50 each for the dinner with all the restaurant’s employees working for free on the night, with that money also going towards the aid.
Manager at the Manzil, Danyal Kamal, said: “This is one of the worst natural disasters ever and I know personally that many people no longer have a house as a result of this.
“I’ve never been to Pakistan, but my mum and dad are originally from there.
“We are so passionate about helping with this and this cause is one that is close to my heart.”
Commenting, Mr Wishart said: “It was a privilege to attend the charitable dinner at Manzil to raise funds for disaster relief in Pakistan following the last month’s devastating floods.
“The Perth South Asian community may be small, but it is big-hearted and generous, attested by the fantastic £6000 raised from the event.
“In times of tragedies, the people of Perthshire never fail to show their support and solidarity, and this was yet another example.
“My thoughts are firmly with those affected by the floods.
“Governments and communities must now come together to help Pakistan recover as quickly as possible during their hour of need.”
