Fundraisers set to walk for cancer charity

A squad of Hearts supporters from Broxburn have organised a walk from Uphall to Tynecastle to raise money for a local cancer charity.

Members of the Broxburn Hearts Supporters Club will embark on the 12-mile walk on Sunday (August 14), the day Hearts will play off against Dundee, to raise money for the Shannon Hughes foundation.

The fundraiser was organised by 22-year-old civil servant, Jack Egan, and his group of friends, who have done two similar fundraisers in the past and have since been joined by other members of the Broxburn Hearts supporters club.

So far the club have raised £370 of their £2000 target on JustGiving, with even more in cash donations.

Broxburn Hearts Supporters Club will also run a raffle to raise money for the local charity, with prizes like a hospitality package at Tynecastle stadium, signed boots from Cammy Devlin, a signed Craig Gordon print, and vouchers for restaurants around Broxburn.

The group, who graduated from Broxburn Academy in 2017, have completed the walk for charity twice before - for the first time in 2019 raising money for Prostate Cancer UK, and for MND Scotland in 2021.

Jack Egan said: ”We’ll be walking all the way into Tynecastle - leaving from the Oatridge Hotel in Uphall where the supporters bus usually leaves from.

“This’ll be the third time we’re doing the walk - hopefully we’ll get good weather for it this year!

“I’m hoping it’ll be a good game. I was confident we’d do well until last Saturday when we were a couple of goals down in the first half hour, we aren’t looking as great as I thought.

“We’ll be leaving about half eight and we usually get there about one-ish. We could probably get there a bit quicker but there are a few slow walkers that hold us back a bit, and we also like to stop for a pint in Ratho about halfway through.

“This year we’re raising money for a local charity, the Shannon Hughes foundation, who support people affected by childhood cancer.

“We were in the same year as Shannon and her story really affected the whole community, so it’s only fitting to do something for the charity in her name.”
