Fundraiser to help Ayrshire footballer rehab after brain surgery smashes target in days

A fundraiser in aid of an Ayrshire footballer who has underwent brain surgery has smashed its target less than a week after being launched.

Hurlford United created a page for donations to help with costs towards Will Graham's recovery after he suffered a bleed on the brain in a game.

He collapsed on the pitch during a Hurlford match last month, and now after successful surgery, he's rehabilitating outside of Ayrshire with his family.

The fundraiser exceeded the £2,500 target just five days into being posted – with more cash piling in by the hour.

A GoFundMe organised by the club read: "We are looking to support Hurlford United player Will Graham, 23, in his recovery from recent brain surgery.

"The local football community was shocked when Will collapsed during a game v Maybole Juniors on Wednesday, July 20 and was shortly later diagnosed with a ruptured brain aneurysm. The volume of messages of support for Will has been overwhelming.

"Following surgery on Friday, July 22, Will now faces his biggest challenge to recover physically and mentally.

"Anyone that knows Will will not be surprised that he is defying the odds already through his determination and a positive mindset.

"This fund is intended primarily to support Will with the rehabilitation process, which will include private neuro-physiotherapy and neuro-psychology.

"The family is incredibly grateful to the neurological department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and will donate to Horatio's Garden, a tranquil garden space to assist patients with rehabilitation away from the ward."
