Fundraiser launched to help award-winning Bristol carer with brain injury

A fundraising page has been set up to help raise vital cash for an award-winning Bristol carer left unable to move or speak. Clayton Mushore was 19 when he suffered a massive brain injury on December 18, 2021 and is currently in a care home.

His injury put him in the ICU for weeks fighting for his life and now his loved ones are determined to help him live as normal a life as possible. They have set up a Just Giving page where they are asking for £10,000 to buy him an EyeGaze machine.

That will allow Clayton to speak using the movement of his eyes. His loved ones say they are all 'desperate to have a conversation with him again' but can only dream of doing so until they get this treatment.

So far, the JustGiving page has raised £2,655 and has over 120 supporters. His friends and family are asking for the campaign to be shared far and wide.

Clayton's friend Aliza Smith set up the fundraiser. She said: "Clayton is such a dear friend to us and we want to do everything we can to help him and his mum. He is such an amazing person who has brilliant potential and we just want to help him as much as we can after he helped us by fighting to stay alive."

In the past, Clayton - who attended Bristol Free School - has been commended for his work as a young carer, helping to care for his older brother with global developmental delay. Back in 2014, he won a Bristol Post Gold Star Award as a young carer, then in 2017 he was featured in a short film put together by local charity, Carers Support Centre, to raise awareness about young carers among teachers and pupils of local schools.

Clayton's former teachers at Bristol Free School are among those who have donated to his JustGiving page, with many leaving messages of support for his recovery. One teacher wrote: "I'm so gutted to read this but you are one strong person and I know you will have the determination to gain back your independence and that smile I remember."

Another said: "Sending you strength and love to you and your family. I believe you will face this challenge with the dignity, warmth and strength as you did through school."
