A FUNDRAISER to help one of Scotland's oldest football clubs has hit a major milestone in just a few days.
It was revealed Dumbarton FC had entered administration earlier this week having been founded in 1872.
A GoFundMe page launched on Tuesday had an initial target of £50,000 but supporters have smashed that in the first couple of days.
The Save Our Sons "fighting fund" has now reached more than £60,000 with a new target of £100,000 now the goal.
Organisers say every penny raised will go towards paying the wages of players and staff.
Dumbarton won the Scottish Football League in its first two seasons in 1891 and 1892 and has one of the most iconic stadiums in the country, with games held in the shadow of Dumbarton Castle.
The fundraiser reads: “Support the fighting fund to save our club.
“Due to the club not receiving financial support from the majority shareholder or monies owed to it, the directors took the hard decision to put the club into administration in order to find a solution to overcome its financial challenges.
“We would greatly appreciate any support you can give.”
Dumbarton are now at the bottom of League One after being deducted 15 points as a result of the administration process.
Latest accounts show the club were owed more than £1.6 million, and that a payment of £300,000 against that loan had not been paid.
Club directors appointed Glasgow-based financial advisors Quantuma as administrators on November 18 after they “were left with no option” after failing to receive money owed from the sale of development land in 2021.
Police confirmed on Thursday they are investigating alleged fraudulent activity at the club.
The club employs 18 playing staff, six football staff and three club staff whose roles are secure, Quantuma managing director ian Wright said this week.
