Funday planned for the lighting of Belfast's biggest bonfire

A North Belfast community is planning a family funday as it prepares to light the city's biggest bonfire as part of their Twelfth celebrations.

The bonfire at Glencairn Way in the Forthriver area was completed this week and stands at around 200 pallets high, with builders working since January to create it.

Builder William Reynolds, who has been involved with the Glencairn Way bonfire for over 20 years, said that this is the largest bonfire that they have built in the area and that those involved took a lot of care to ensure that they were safe throughout and the bonfire remained stable.

Speaking to Belfast Live, he said: "Every year a group of local lads help build the bonfire for the area and this year we decided that we would go a bit taller than we normally would and created our biggest one yet.

"We have been working at this since the end of January when we started collecting and having wood and pallets dropped off at the site. We have had so much dropped off that we could have built it even higher and we have made sure that any materials that shouldn't be here have been removed, with the Housing Executive clearing dumped tyres from the area.

"Throughout the build we have all been wearing harnesses and only the older builders have been working at height as they are aware of the risks involved.

"We are just looking forward to Tuesday where we will have a family funday for the community ahead of lighting it."

Elizabeth Rankin has organised the community funday for the 11th of July and says she is excited for the day, although is very aware of how busy she will be.

She said: "We have organised a nice day for all of the community here where there will be facepainting, bouncy castles, a BBQ and lots of food for everyone to enjoy.

"We will have at least 72 older residents and 62 children and their parents attending on the day so we are wanting to make sure that there is something for everyone.

"We are very thankful to Jackie's butchers on the Shankill for donating food to us for the occasion, which has been a big help as everything else has been entirely funded by the local community.

"We are just looking forward to this week when we can all come together and have a nice day of fun and maybe a drink or two!"
