Trying to come up with date ideas can be hard. It can feel like you have exhausted every idea you have and before you know it you end up spending the night in with a film and a takeaway.

That’s all well and good now and then but sometimes it’s nice to spend your free time doing something different with your other half.

Here are 23 ideas for dates in Liverpool that you are both sure to love.

Go to a gig in Liverpool

There's never a shortage of artists performing in the city, whether it's it's huge names in sold-out venues or new local acts performing at bars. If you're looking to plan something in advance, you can check out our story on the gigs you won't want to miss this year.

Or, if you and your partner are more spontaneous, you can head into town and see what you can find. Bars like the Zanzibar, The Jacaranda, The Shipping Forecast, EBGBs, 24 Kitchen Street and many more regularly host gigs, and they're great value for money too.

Uncover Liverpool's secret bars

If you want to impress your date why not uncover some of Liverpool’s secret bars. Either tucked away or hidden in plain sight, there is plenty to discover across the city.

Discover Cains Brewery

The resurgence of the former Cains Brewery Village is something to behold. What was once a derelict old brewery has now been transformed into a bustling village of bars, restaurants and attractions. Festivals in Liverpool

Bongo’s Bingo

It might not be a conventional date - but then again - this isn't a conventional bingo. Is it a rave, a show or an event? Nobody knows but it’s an exciting night out. Couples might even be lucky enough to get a line or a full house and win a special prize. Bongo’s Bingos also gets big-name bookings such as David Hasselhoff, The Vengaboys, Fatman Scoop and B*Witched.

Liverpool's farmers' market

There are plenty of treasures to be found at Liverpool’s markets including a lot of great food. Farmers' markets are open from 9am to 2pm on the following days:

  • Second Saturday of the month - Woolton Village, L25 7RG.
  • Second Thursday of the month - University Square, L3 5TX.
  • Second Tuesday of every week (Term time only so check opening days and times on 07801 406108) , University of Liverpool, Ashton Street, Liverpool, L69 3GE.
  • Third Saturday of the month - Garthdale Road, off Allerton Road, L18 (next to Barclays Bank).
  • Fourth Saturday of the month - Lark Lane, L17 8UP.
  • Not all farmer's markets operate in January and February owing to the kipper period. Please check with Liverpool Markets Team on 07720 829985 whether these markets are in operation.

    Shiverpool Liverpool

    Work your way down Lark Lane

    Lark Lane one of the best-known and best-loved streets in Liverpool. With so many quirky independents and a huge array of bars, bistros and restaurants, there’s sure to be something for everyone. Art galleries and quirky shops rub shoulders with tea houses, ice cream parlours, independent cafes, boutiques, grocery stores and small businesses. It’s worth taking a stroll down to see where you end up.

    Visit one of Liverpool's museum

    You could easily spend a whole day going around the museums in Liverpool alone and the great thing is they’re free. Plus it’s a great way to come across as intellectual and cultured to your date.

    Take a trip to the Cathedral

    Liverpool Anglican Cathedral is one of the city's best-known landmarks but did you know that you can go to the top of the tower? Although everyone knows about the Cathedral not everyone has experienced the stunning 360-degree views of Liverpool and beyond. On a clear day, you can even see Wales and the Blackpool Tower.

    The Tower Experience includes a 10-minute film about how the cathedral was built, a glance at the world’s highest and heaviest peal of bells, a bell ringer experience and a look at the collection of Victorian and Edwardian ecclesiastical embroidery.

    Get a ferry across the Mersey

    The River Explorer Cruise runs all year round and boasts stunning views of Liverpool’s waterfront. Plus it’s a great way to get around. The cruise runs between three locations: The Pier Head and Seacombe and Woodside on the Wirral. The total journey time is 50 minutes and you can break and re-start your journey at any terminal to visit riverside attractions.

    Stroll along one of Merseyside's beaches

    We’re so lucky in Merseyside to have many beach locations. There’s nothing quite like a refreshing, romantic walk along the beach to break up the day and there are plenty to choose from here.

    If you fancy a date day on the beach you can visit Southport, Formby, Wallasey, West Kirby, Crosby, Thurstaston, Hoylake, Meols and Birkenhead.

    City Sightseeing bus tour

    Even if you’re from Liverpool the City Sightseeing bus tour is a great date day. It’s a chance to see the whole of the city in just one day. Plus, it’s hop-on-hop-off so at any point, you can jump off and enjoy the waterfront or Chinatown or a museum and gallery.

    Play in an escape room

    There’s nothing like being trapped inside of a live escape room to put your relationship to the test.     Comedy in Liverpool

    Going to see some stand up comedy is a brilliant way to keep your date happy and laughing. Whether it’s a first date or you’re just treating your other half, there’s nothing like a laugh to get in the good books.

    Liverpool has plenty of comedy venues to choose from such as Laughterhouse Comedy on Fenwick Street and Hot Water Comedy Club on Hardman Street.

    Outdoors things to do in Liverpool

    If you’re the adventurous type then swinging from high ropes or zip-wiring might be your type of date. An adventure centre is a great way to have fun and show off just how brave you are.

    Otterspool Adventure Centre has plenty of adrenaline-pumping activities from high ropes to abseiling, obstacle courses, and a leap of faith. Go Ape in Delamere Forest also has many activities from zip wires, Tarzan swings, rope ladders and obstacles and crossings.

    Crazy Golf

    Why not try your hand at a bit of crazy golf and see if you can get that hole in one. Golf Fang is a new adult-only crazy golf course in the former Cains Brewery off Parliament Street.

    Ghetto Golf (Colin Lane/ECHO)

    The 18-hole course is also complete with a cocktail bar and street food stand so you can finish off your game with a tipple. Alternatively, there is Championship Adventure Golf in New Brighton.

    Head to a nearby zoo

    There’s nothing like some cute animals to get a date off to a good start. If you’re looking for a different day out in Merseyside why not see all the wildlife that is on offer. You can see the elephants in Chester Zoo or the lions in Knowsley Safari and the tigers in Blackpool Zoo.

    Best places for dessert in Liverpool

    Desserts are the new three-course meal. Instead of sitting down to a romantic, it seems more people are opting to share a dessert instead. If you want to indulge a little bit then why not visit one of Liverpool’s dessert parlours such as Kaspa’s.

    Alternatively, take a trip to Caffe Cream in New Brighton for some ice cream or Icestone Gelato above Five Guys in Queens Square and Heavenly Desserts at the bottom of Liverpool ONE on the Strand.

    Have a spa day treat

    Nothing says treat yourself more than a spa day. There are plenty of spas in Merseyside that have couples treatments and allow you to spend some quality time with your other half while being pampered. If you think you deserve a treat then you can visit Thornton Hall or spend the day being pampered in the Titanic Hotel.

    Go-karting in Liverpool

    If you’re a thrill-seeker and want to show off your skills then why not take to the track. Go Karting is a fun date idea for those who don’t fancy a run of the mill day out. If you’ve got a need for speed then you can visit TeamSport Go Karting or Hooton Park Circuit.

    Grab a drink

    Attend a wine-tasting class

    Local shop Merseymade usually have a raft of events on every month, including wine-tasting experiences and classes. You can also check out the classes at Wine Unearthed, who do virtual wine tastings if you struggle to get out and about.

    If you're looking to pick up some more knowledge and skills while bonding with your partner, you can see if there's a wine-tasting for you.

    Take a pottery course

    You and your significant other can have fun together, pick up a new skill, and even walk away with some new crockery to use!

    Ritchie the Potter runs pottery courses at the back of the Bridewell studios and gallery, or you can head to Lark Lane Pottery for one of their beginners courses. In most cases, it takes at least a week to fire your creations in a kiln, so if you're looking for a one-off, be prepared to leave without your creations!

    Go to a pasta making class

    Flour Will Fly offer pasta making classes from their base on Water Street, and Fritto on Smithdown road have run workshops on Italian cooking, although they aren't regular classes so you'll have to check their website. You can attend an Introduction to pasta making with your partner and pick up a new skill while bonding them.

    From there, you could start having pasta making nights in at home and save money as well as having fun.
