Fuming Eurovision fans slam new merchandise as price is branded an 'absolute joke'

The Eurovision Song Contest is coming to Liverpool this year as the UK is set to host on behalf of 2022 winners Ukraine, which has fans beside themselves with excitement.

Fans are chomping at the bit ready for tickets to be released to the show but until then they will have to settle for merchandise and rumours of the UK's chosen singer for 2023.

Unfortunately, the latest merchandise release has been met with heavy criticism from disgruntled fans as the prices on Eurovision's 'Rainbow collection' is more than most were expecting it to be - with the jumper as the prime offender.

The jumper was heavily criticised at £66 plus shipping (eurovision.tv)

"Shine bright! The #Eurovision Rainbow collection is available now!" tweeted the official Eurovision account, with a link to their new launch which features three items - a jumper, a bag, and a hat.

Each item has the Eurovision logo embroidered with a pastel rainbow colouring, against a plain black or cream background.

While many liked the design, the price was simply too high with the 'Comfy Rainbow Coloured Eurovision Sweater' costing €75 or just over £66.

This is before adding on the approximate €8.40 for shipping it to the UK - or more for countries like France, Italy and last year's winners Ukraine.

Tweets of "only for the rich", "ow, that's expensive", and "how much?" flooded Eurovision's replies and quote tweets, with some pointing out there is still a cost of living crisis happening in the UK.

One fan wrote: "Y'all I'm not paying 75€ for a Comfy Rainbow Coloured Eurovision Sweater." with a second added: "Love the sweater; hate the price."

"I was so excited for this drop, but those prices??? nah," another tweeted and someone else said: "The jumpers really nice and i really want it but is it f*** worth €75."

The 'Stylish Rainbow Coloured Eurovision Cap' retails for €29 or £26 while the 'Spacious Rainbow Coloured Eurovision Duffle Bag' would set you back €69 or £60. For anyone wanting all three items, fans can pick up a bundle which is currently on sale for €155, saving you €20.

Many commenters did say they wanted to buy the merchandise but just couldn't afford the high price tag, with one adding: "I'd get the duffel bag if it wasn't €69."

Another said: "I'll try when I have my payday." and a third replied: "We will be buying."

Some fans have accused Eurovision of "rainbow-washing" with the subtle pride flag design, which is unsurprising as Eurovision has positioned itself as an LGBTQ+ friendly space.

"Eurovision selling rainbow products during LGBT+ History Month but not saying Pride and not mentioning any donation to any LGBTI+ charity?" said one disappointed fan.

Someone else added: "Will the proceeds actually go to helping the LGBTQ+ community or just straight to the EBU's pocket?"

The Mirror has contacted The Eurovision Song Contest for comment.
