Fulton County DA under subpoena for alleged financial misconduct

Fulton County Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade speaks during a hearing in Superior Court of Fulton County, in Atlanta

The Fulton County District Attorney in Georgia, Fonny Willis, is facing a congressional subpoena following allegations that she financially benefited from a romantic relationship with one of her colleagues. Willis admitted to starting a personal relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she hired for the election interference case against former President Trump. However, she claims that the relationship did not taint the case.

This acknowledgment by Willis contrasts with her previous statements after assuming office, where she indicated that she would not date individuals working under her. The allegations against her also include claims that Wade used his salary to fund trips for the two of them to various vacation spots around the country. In an affidavit, Wade stated that they both contributed to the expenses, but he never gave any of his salary back to Willis.

Willis has referred to these allegations as a spectacle and a circus. However, the judge now needs to determine whether these claims are sufficient to quash the subpoenas and cancel an evidentiary hearing scheduled for February 15th. During this hearing, Willis and Wade would be questioned about the nature and timeline of their relationship, as well as how public funds were allocated.

Critics from the Republican party are unlikely to be satisfied with Willis's response. If the allegations are proven true, it would suggest that she directed funds to a romantic partner without proper authorization, while he may have been unqualified for the position. These critics are now raising concerns about potential additional misconduct.

Moreover, Willis's office is currently under investigation on multiple fronts. Three separate investigations by Georgia lawmakers are underway, in addition to a federal probe initiated by Congressman Jim Jordan from the House Judiciary Committee. The federal investigation alleges that Willis's office misused more than $400,000 in federal funds intended for at-risk youth, diverting it towards purchasing MacBooks, travel expenses, and other non-essential items. The investigation further claims that a whistleblower who attempted to bring attention to this matter was unjustly terminated. Willis, on the other hand, has denied these allegations, asserting that they are completely false and that the whistleblower was dismissed for valid reasons.

Defense attorneys argue that a hearing is necessary and contend that the case should be dismissed. As the investigations continue, it remains to be seen how these allegations surrounding Willis and her office will be resolved.
