Comedy drama Everything Everywhere All At Once has cleaned up at the 2023 Academy Awards – but there was glory for Scotland as a Stirling screenwriter's film was named best international flick.
World champion triathlete Lesley Paterson co-wrote a film adaptation of All Quiet On The Western Front after reading the book as a schoolgirl in Stirling. The German-language film, picked up by Netflix 16 years after Lesley first bought the rights to the novel, won Best International Picture at the Oscars last night.
It also won Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Production Design – but missed out on the coveted Best Picture award after Everything Everywhere All At Once swept the board. The Mirror reports the film won seven Oscars and star Michelle Yeoh made history as the first Asian to win a Best Actress gong.
TV funnyman Jimmy Kimmel took on presenting duties for the 95th edition of the awards, with Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal and Andrew Garfield among the award presenters. Brendan Fraser bagged his first honour from the Academy for his role in The Whale – a phenomenal comeback after allegedly being blacklisted from the movie industry for speaking out about sexual assault.
Accepting the award, he joked: "So this is what the multiverse looks like. I thank the Academy for this honour...Darren Aronofsky for throwing me a creative lifeline and hauling me aboard the good ship The Whale."
Legendary actress Jamie Lee Curtis paid tribute to her famous parents as she won her first Academy Award on Sunday night. The actress, daughter of Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, thanked all of the special people in her life as she yelled: "We just won an Oscar!"
The US actress, 64, said on stage: "I know it looks like I am standing up here on my own but I am not. There are hundreds of people and hundreds of people.
"To my family, my beautiful husband, Christopher Guest, my daughters, Annie and Ruby, my sister Kelly - we just won an Oscar. To all of the people who have supported the genre movies that I have made for hundreds and hundreds of thousands, we just won an Oscar together."
Lady Gaga and Rihanna both missed out on an Oscar, as 'Naatu Naatu' from 'RRR' won the award for Best Original Song and beat the two pop icons and their fellow nominees in the category. Other winners included animated BBC short flick The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse and Avatar: The Way of Water.
