Full list of train timetable alterations as Northern and Avanti West Coast cancel services due to Storm Eunice

Train passengers are being urged to rethink their journeys and only travel if necessary on Friday.

Storm Eunice is set to bring strong winds to much of the UK which is likely to lead to major disruption on the railways.

Passengers are being warned that the storm could cause trees to be blown onto train lines, possibly leading to delays and cancellations.

In Wales, all services on Friday have been cancelled, while other train operators will be running a greatly reduced service.

Blanket speed restrictions of 50mph will be in place on the railways in the majority of areas meaning journeys may take longer.

A Network Rail spokesman said disruption is “inevitable” after the Met Office issued a red weather warning for parts of the south of England and said flying debris could result in danger to life.

Here's what train companies have said about service alterations for Friday during Storm Eunice.

TransPennine Express

TransPennine Express urged people not to take the train on Friday amid severe weather expected in northern England and Scotland.

Warning that “significant disruption is likely”, the operator urged customers to travel on Thursday or wait until Saturday.

The train operator said: "Due to the expected significant disruption across the TransPennine Express network, customers are advised NOT TO TRAVEL on Friday 18 February. If your journey is absolutely necessary, please ensure you check before you travel."

Paul Watson, operations director for the firm, said: “Storm Eunice will be the second storm to impact our services this week and it is likely to cause major disruption to train services, right across the North of England and into Scotland.

“The most important thing is that our customers and staff are kept safe, and we are urging customers not to travel by train on Friday 18 February. We are instead asking customers to make their journeys on either Thursday 17 or Saturday 19 February.”

Avanti West Coast

Avanti West Coast said it will run an amended timetable on Friday, with longer journey times due to speed restrictions.

A statement from the operator said: Trains across the Avanti West Coast network will be operating to an amended timetable on Friday 18 February – with fewer services and some journeys involving changes.

"In addition, an emergency speed restriction of 50mph will be in place on most of the route, significantly extending journey times.

"Avanti West Coast strongly recommend customers do not travel on Friday 18 February."

In addition, there will be just one morning service and one evening service between Holyhead and Crewe.

Northern

Northern will run a reduced service on Friday and it will not be providing alternative transport.

The train operator said: "The Met Office have issued a number of yellow and amber weather warning for gale force winds and snow on Friday as a result of Storm Eunice.

"As a result of this, trains across the Northern network will be cancelled, amended or revised. You are advised NOT TO TRAVEL on Friday 18 February.

"Tickets dated for Friday 18 February will be valid to travel on Thursday 17, Saturday 19 and Monday 21 February."

A reduced service will operate on the following routes in both directions:

  • Blackpool North and Manchester Airport via Bolton

Services that usually run between Leeds and Lincoln will only run between Sheffield and Lincoln.

The 04:56 & 20:42 Middlesbrough to Whitby, and the 06:30 & 22:23 Whitby to Middlesbrough services will be cancelled.

Transport for Wales

Welsh train services will be suspended for the whole day on Friday, Transport for Wales has announced.

Passengers have been advised that disruption is likely into the weekend as more than 1,000 miles of track in Wales will need to be checked and cleared of debris and fallen trees.

In a statement on Thursday, Transport for Wales said: "On Friday 18 February, our services will be suspended all day. Tickets dated for the 18th and 19th of Feb will be accepted on services today, over the weekend and on Monday (21st)."

The decision for a countrywide closure of lines in Wales “has not been made lightly”, said Bill Kelly of Network Rail Wales and Borders.

He added: “The safety of passengers and staff is our top priority.”

CrossCountry

CrossCountry said: "CrossCountry will run a severely reduced and amended service on Friday 18 February. Customers are advised to avoid travelling on this date.

"Instead, CrossCountry customers with tickets dated Friday 18 February may use their tickets on Thursday 17 or Sunday 20 February."
