AIB has confirmed that several of their branches nationwide are set to go “cashless” by the end of 2022.
The bank is planning to expand its relationship with An Post so cash and cheque services will still be available for those who need them.
Minister of State with responsibility for Public Procurement and eGovernment Ossian Smyth said he wants it to be possible for people to locally access a place to deposit or withdraw cash.

He told RTE Morning Ireland: "Whether that is done through credit unions or whether it is done through post offices or whether it is done through some form of community banking, whatever way it works, I want it to be possible for people to locally access a place where they can deposit cash or withdraw cash.
"I think it's important that people in rural areas have access to banking. I'm happy to see that it will be possible to continue to lodge cash and withdraw cash from a post office to your AIB account and I think that Bank of Ireland is taking the same approach."
The move will mean that the affected branches will not have notes, coins, cheques, foreign exchange, bank drafts; and will remove any drop safes, night safes and ATMs outside.
The following branches will be part of the programme and move to cashless by October 21:
Clonskeagh Dublin 14
Cornelscourt Dublin 18
Dundrum Dublin 14
Rathfarnham Dublin 16
Sandymount Dublin 18
The Central Bank of Ireland expects AIB to ensure that its decisions are considered carefully with a consumer-focused approach according to RTE. They added that the bank should provide vulnerable customers with the assistance necessary to make sure that those customers can get full access to basic banking services.
