The Royal Airforce (RAF) has announced details of where spectators can view the Battle of Britain Memorial flights this summer. The list, which includes shows in the Midlands, outlines what time the displays will take place.
The show can be viewed as part of the Midlands Air Festival which takes place at Ragley Hall, Alcester in Warwickshire this weekend from Friday, June 3 until Sunday, June 5. The event will also feature hot air balloons, Nightfire and a large model aircraft display.
Midlands Air Festival is celebrating its fourth year and also a special Jubilee event this year with an extra special selection of shows and trade stands. The Nightfire show includes aircraft streaming pyrotechnics from their wings or even themselves while performing loops and rolls. The RAF Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, will be headlining the Air Festival, bringing two displays to the Platinum Jubilee special show.
The display will take part at events such as The English Riviera Airshow in Torbay, Cosford Airshow, Isle of Wight Airshow and the Duxford Summer Airshow. It will also spend time in Eastbourne at the Airshow there later in June.
The display usually runs from May until the end of September each year. Pre-season work-up flying for the crews who take part normally takes place in April. Although all shows are set to take place over the summer when good weather is more likely, flying is subject to conditions and aircraft serviceability.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight usually flies over 100 displays and around 800 flypasts at events across the UK and Northern Ireland during the display season. This adds up to around 1,000 individual aircraft appearances each year.
After the season ends, the majority of the aircraft are kept on the ground for maintenance to prepare them for the next season and make sure they are preserved as much as possible. At least one aircraft is scheduled to undergo 'major' maintenance per year.
