Full list of all RAF stations across the East Midlands

The British defence has joined Nato forces in a collective effort to resist the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

This includes the country's Royal Air Force (RAF) - which has several stations across the East Midlands.

Nottinghamshire's only station, RAF Syerston in Newark, is home to a Flying Training School.

It houses both the headquarters and the RAF Central Gliding School, which provides formal training courses for members of the Volunteer Gliding Squadrons (VGS) located at various other locations around the UK.

The station initially opened as a Bomber Command station in 1940 operating Wellington, Manchester and Lancaster bombers.

Elsewhere in East Midlands, the RAF lists five active stations in Lincolnshire.

These are RAF Scampton, RAF Waddington, RAF Cranwell, RAF Digby and RAF Coningsby.

Airfields such as RAF Barkston Heath are not included on the RAF's website.

Another aircraft station is the RAF Wittering located in Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire, as well as RAF Wyton in Cambridgeshire.

Elsewhere in Nottinghamshire, hundreds of homes are being built on the former RAF Newton site near Bingham.

Anyone with a keen history in the RAF can also visit the Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa, which has close links with the 617 Dambusters Squadron. The Lincolnshire hotel hosts a range of memorabilia and tributes to Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC.
