Heading to the movies is probably on your list of things to do this summer - and Newcastle’s most iconic historic building is offering up film nights with a unique twist.
The city’s ancient Castle will be screening a selection of films within the walls of The Great Hall in its 12th-century Castle Keep. With cult classics, historical horror and fantasy blockbusters all lined up for the weeks ahead, the Castle promises to be one of the most atmospheric places to kick back and watch something on the big screen.
The first film showing on Friday 5 August, 1986 cult classic Labyrinth starring David Bowie, is already sold out. But there are currently still tickets available for the next offering - Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner, screening on Friday 12 August.

Friday 19 August will see a screening of 1973 horror The Wicker Man - sure to be even more of a chilling watch within the stone walls of the ancient Keep. The following day on Saturday 20 August will show 1987 black comedy Withnail & I.
Heading into the final weekend of August there will be a screening of Mel Brook’s 1974 hit Young Frankenstein on Friday 26. And the month of movies will come to a close with a special event on Saturday 27 - a screening of historical horror Witchfinder General will be followed by a talk from Kate Liddane on the real-life witchfinder who inspired the film and how it connects to Newcastle’s own witch trials.
That’s it for August - but there’s lots more to come from Newcastle Castle by way of movie nights later in the year. September has a real treat in store for Tolkien fans; Middle Earth will meet the Middle Ages as the Lord of the Rings trilogy screens in the Keep across the first three consecutive Fridays in September.
Then Halloween celebrations will be in full swing, with six creepy classics to take you through the spooky season. Beginning on Friday 30 September with The Lost Boys, the Keep will go on to screen The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Taste of Fear, Hocus Pocus, and Nosferatu the Vampyre before finishing off with The Exorcist.
Doors open at 6pm for each film showing for a 6:30pm start time, and tickets cost £12 - you can book via the Newcastle Castle website . Staff advise moviegoers to wrap up warm as it can get very chilly in the Keep.
