Former Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic proclaimed “I’m a Geordie boy” as he revelled in the boos from Sunderland fans after his Fulham side edged past the Black Cats in the FA Cup.

Fulham progressed to the fifth round as they saw off Sunderland 3-2 in a bitterly cold replay at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday. Mitrovic came off the bench to assist Andreas Pereira for Fulham’s second goal of the night.

After the match, boos from Sunderland fans were directed at the Serb as he completed pitch-side interviews with the BBC.

Mitrovic played for Sunderland’s fiercest rivals, Newcastle, between 2015 and 2018, when he scored 17 goals in 72 outings for the club.

“I love it,” he admitted about the booing from Black Cats fans. “I’m a Geordie boy, so they don’t like me here. I knew it before! A good atmosphere and three goals against them so I’m sure a lot of Newcastle fans will be happy as well.”

Mitrovic’s mini-goal drought continues as he reached five Fulham matches without scoring, but like his manager Marco Silva earlier in the week, he doesn’t seem too concerned.

“It was really hard to come off the bench, but I got an assist,” he said. “I would be more happy if I grabbed a goal but I managed to find Andreas who put the goal away. In the end, job done so we’re really happy.”

Fulham host Leeds in the fifth round of the FA Cup, and this weekend they welcome Nottingham Forest to Craven Cottage in the Premier League.
