‘FSG out!’ Liverpool fans fly protest banner over Anfield during Tottenham thriller

A banner protesting against Fenway Sports Group’s (FSG) ownership of Liverpool was flown over Anfield during the enthralling clash with Tottenham.

At half-time of Sunday’s thrilling seven-goal Premier League contest on Merseyside, won by a last-gasp Diogo Jota strike just moments after Tottenham had completed a stunning fightback from being 3-0 down inside 15 minutes, a plane flew over the stadium trailing a message that read: “LFC- Sox- Penguins - same problems FSG OUT”.

The banner referred to all of FSG’s current sports teams, with Liverpool mentioned along with Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the United States.

FSG have owned Liverpool since replacing fellow Americans George Gillett Jr and Tom Hicks in a £300million buyout in 2010, delivering a sixth Champions League trophy in 2019 and a first Premier League title for some 30 years 12 months later.

However, the relationship with Reds fans has soured notably since then, with lingering fury over the European Super League debacle, high ticket pricing and a perceived lack of suitable investment in the playing squad that has seen Jurgen Klopp’s side go from title contenders to battling just to make the Europa League this term.

In February, FSG owner John W Henry reiterated that Liverpool were not for sale, despite the rumours fuelled by his earlier admission late last year that they would consider outside investment and new shareholders if it was in the best interests of the club.

US investment group RedBird Capital Partners paid £533m for an 11 per cent stake in FSG back in 2021.
