Frustration over 'nonsense' HMO plans that neighbours say should be left to city centre

Neighbours in a 'quiet, family area' of Nottinghamshire have criticised plans for more homes of multiple occupation being created in their town. Residents in Netherfield have argued the properties should be 'left to the city centre'.

Their intervention comes as Gedling Borough Council is due to discuss converting three properties in Meadow Road, Ashwell Street and Victoria Road into HMOs. The plans will be discussed on Wednesday, June 15, but there are concerns about the impact the move would have on parking and noise.

Lesley Turner, 76, who is retired and has lived in the area with his wife for 16 years, said: “All of that [the HMOs] nonsense should be left to the city centre.

“With HMOs too, you don’t know who’s moving next door to you. They should be moving these people into areas that are either in or near to the city centre.

Of course these people need somewhere to live, it just isn’t an appropriate location at all. The last thing anyone wants in their area is noise and disruption.”

Leon Key, 35, shared concerns about parking. The delivery driver said: “If you look through these streets, the roads are packed with cars - so if there’s houses of multiple occupancy and say five out of the seven people that live there have cars, where will they park? Noise, I think, may also be an issue, the areas are nice and quiet.

“I may not have had a problem with noise around 10 years ago but when you have children, there’s nothing worse than a noisy neighbour keeping you up at night. I think everyone here would agree that they don’t want that to turn into a reality.”

Also a resident in the area is Caz Noelle, 55. Caz understands people's concerns. The musician and writer told Nottinghamshire Live: “I wouldn’t be too bothered [by a HMO] but I do think there needs to be more family homes.

“I moved a year ago and I was lucky, it can be very difficult to afford places. I love the area, it’s quiet which suits me fine.

“HMOs can be aimed at students who are already in enough debt. I think there should be something to improve that.”

In May, Nottinghamshire Live reported on residents' reaction to a possible HMO that had been put forward on Chandos Street in Netherfield. Previously, concerns were raised at a meeting held on March 3.
