Anger over drivers in Radford where 'whole street is a mess'

Radford businesses close to Salisbury Street say they are frustrated as the ‘whole street is a mess’ following groups of people parking on the street and leaving litter behind. They say empty bottles of alcohol, nitrogen oxide canisters, balloons and litter are strewn around regularly. There are also claims of damage being caused too.

Some say they dread showing up to work worrying about how much more ‘filthy’ rubbish they will find. Gary Barlow, managing director of DGB Refrigerators, told Nottinghamshire Live that it’s a shame the street is left in such a state.

The 57-year-old said: “Every week, even today, our car park has nitrogen oxide canisters, balloons, empty packets of weed and alcohol. They park here at night, park next door and park down the road.

“The whole street is a mess. One of the problems is that people taking nitrogen oxide are driving. It’s filthy. We've been here for 30 years, it's coming to a point where we want to move. I don’t care if they meet up here, they can do what they want as long as they take the rubbish with them. The council have done their part. The police can’t do much. It’s a real shame - it’s a mess.”

According to other business owners this situation has been going on for over a year now and they are confronted by rubbish most days.

Raja Khan, 42, owner Trent Car sales, works further down Salisbury Street and says he notices the rubbish at the top end of the street. Mr Khan said: “We have students come here behaving irresponsibly. I haven’t spotted any rubbish here, but at the top. I spotted some litter around the top. Like you said, some cans and empty bottles but that’s about it.”

Yusuf McCallum, who works at FTA Furnishings, told Nottinghamshire Live that he sees the litter that gets left behind. Mr McCallum said: “We did see a bit of rubbish next door. We just notice the rubbish left behind. It is annoying. I notice the odd bit of rubbish.”

A City Council spokesperson said: “We have been aware of these complaints for a while and share the concerns of local residents and businesses about this behaviour. Since the end of last year, local CPOs and the Community Protection Response Car have been patrolling the area to act as a high visibility deterrent and also look to tackle some of the environmental issues reported such as littering.

“We have not received any complaints through our ‘Report It’ system since last November, but patrols have been continuing.”
