Sir David Attenborough is back on the BBC with Frozen Planet II, a new series exploring snow- and ice-covered wildernesses, which cover one-fifth of Earth.
The first season of Frozen Planet aired more than a decade ago, and looked at life in the Arctic and the Antarctic.
But this new series will explore frozen wildernesses from “its highest peaks, to its snowbound deserts, to deep beneath the ice”.
The new series will also highlight the impact climate change is having on these cold environments.
In an introduction to the new series, Sir David Attenborough said: “But, just as we’re beginning to understand its wildlife, we’re recognising an alarming truth.
“Our frozen wildernesses are disappearing at faster rates than ever before. Never has it been more important to understand what is going on in these icy territories.”
Frozen Planet II reviews
The Guardian’s Lucy Mangan awarded the first episode a five-star rating and said: “This latest offering from the crack team and Sir David accomplishes its goal as effectively as ever; it makes us, in the best way, children again.”
The Independent rated Frozen Planet II three stars, with Nick Hilton saying: “But for all the beauty, the thrill of seeing stories from the natural world is somewhat diminished here.
“Tigers and bears and whales and penguins: this feels more like a greatest hits compilation than a documentary that has something new, and pressing, to say.”
Rachael Sigee, who awarded the episode five stars, wrote for the i that: “Frozen Planet II transports viewers to places that most of us will never set eyes on in real life, and focuses on animal species that have had some of the most harrowing experiences in captivity at the hands of humans.
“Ending exactly as it should – with a call to arms – its scale and finesse must not be taken for granted, and its message must be heard.”
