Frontier And Spirit Airlines Are Merging

Two prominent discount airlines just announced a merger to create a single carrier with competitive fares serving the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. The Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines merger can offer cheap fares to popular destinations and remain an attractive alternative to the legacy carriers.

America’s Most Competitive Ultra-Low Fare Airline

In a February 7, 2022 announcement, Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines mention they will merge into “America’s most competitive ultra-low fare airline.” Neither group has disclosed the new airline name, loyalty program, or company headquarters. However, it appears that Frontier Airlines will hold the majority stake.

While the general public will learn more about the nitty-gritty merger details in the coming months on the airline website, here are some of the highlights:

  • Over 145 destinations in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean
  • 650+ non-stop routes
  • Expand service to small and mid-size cities that are currently underserved
  • Estimated $1 billion in passenger savings per year
  • The combined fleet will be the youngest, most fuel-efficient, and greenest in the U.S.

The merger can also boost the stability of the discount airline space for travelers and airline employees.

While domestic travel numbers are back to their pre-pandemic levels for leisure travel, the travel industry is still recovering from nearly two years of reduced demand. Merging helps these airlines remain in operation and continue offering routes and prices that the legacy carriers currently don’t.

Frequent flyers can also have an easier time collecting flyer miles while visiting their favorite domestic and international destinations across the Americas and the Caribbean.

Summary

If you prefer flying Frontier or Spirit to save a few bucks, soon you won’t have to choose between the two. As airline fares increase along with passenger volumes, booking discount fares will become a priority again. This merger can give travelers a better flight option.
