From TV to farming - the extra money Nottinghamshire's MPs earned in 2022

Following Matt Hancock's controversial decision to take part in ITV's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here, 2022 has seen the debate around MPs' second jobs and extra income reignited. It's not yet known exactly how much the former Health Secretary received for his time in the jungle, but he will soon have to declare this amount in the register of MPs' financial interests.

This register has existed since 1974 and MPs have to use it to set out what other income, hospitality or donations they have received, or what other roles they hold outside Parliament. MPs already receive a basic annual salary of £84,144 as of April 2022, and some have argued that they should not have other jobs or earn extra money alongside this.

Labour has said that it could ban MPs from having second jobs if the party is elected at the next general election, with just 'a few exceptions' to this rule. As the debate continues, below is the outside roles and extra income that Nottinghamshire's MPs have earned during 2022, as set out in the register of interests.

Lee Anderson

Lee Anderson declared in the register that was paid £1,000 from the Mail on Sunday newspaper for an article he wrote in January. Mr Anderson has donated all of this fee to the Sutton Community Food Bank to go towards a project helping people with rising energy bills.

The MP for Ashfield also said that since November 2, he has been a presenter for GB News. He is the face of a weekly segment, called The Real World with Lee Anderson, and he says that for his work on the channel, he gets paid £200 a week.

Ben Bradley

As well as being the MP for Mansfield, Ben Bradley has served as the leader of Nottinghamshire County Council since May 2021. For this role, he gets paid £35,211 a year.

Mr Bradley is also a member of the Executive Board of East Midlands Councils, for which he gets paid £600 a year.

Brendan Clarke-Smith

Bassetlaw's MP has received two payments in 2022 from Ipsos MORI for surveys. Mr Clarke-Smith received £225 in both January and March, donating both fees to the Bassetlaw Conservative Association.

Ruth Edwards

The MP for Rushcliffe received no extra income and held no outside roles during 2022.

Lilian Greenwood

The MP for Nottingham South received no extra income and held no outside roles during 2022.

Darren Henry

As well as being the MP for Broxtowe, Darren Henry is a member of the Stapleford Town Board, although this is an unpaid role.

Nottingham North MP Alex Norris also received money from Ipsos MORI, receiving two payments of £225 in August. Mr Norris donated both of these payments to charity.

Tom Randall

Mark Spencer is a partner in his family farming business CH Spencer and Son in Mapperley Plains. The Sherwood MP receives a benefit in kind from the farm of between £5,000 and £10,000 a year in the form of utilities for his family home. Mr Spencer says he carries out a maximum of 100 hours per year of work on the farm.
