Luke McCowan admits a Scotland call-up isn’t something he has been actively targeting this season - but the Celtic midfielder believes he would be ready if Steve Clarke comes calling.
The 27-year-old has impressed since making the step up to the Glasgow giants from Dundee in August 2024, earning his fair share of game time under Brendan Rodgers despite having fierce competition in his position.
With Clarke set to name his latest squad on Tuesday ahead of Scotland’s UEFA Nations League play-offs against Greece, McCowan’s form - six goals and five assists from 30 appearances - has sparked speculation over whether he could be in contention for an international debut.
McCowan, however, remains relaxed about the possibility of representing his country at Hampden Park later this month.

“Maybe not a target this season,” he said.
“It’s just something that’s hopefully on the horizon at one point, but as I’ve said before, it’s not something that’s jumped out at me from my career since. It’s not something I’m desperate for.
“If it comes along, it comes along. I’m at a great club, I’m playing most weeks, and I’m enjoying that.
“If that happens, I’m sure I’ll be happy, but it’s about focusing on Celtic just now.”

“I think if I was to get called up, I know I’d be able to deal with it a lot better than I would in previous years,” he added.
“If it does come along, I know I’ll be ready for it mentally, physically, and tactically.
“Hopefully it does happen, but if it doesn’t, it’s not something that’s going to get to me.”
As Scotland enters a crucial phase in their efforts to stay in Section A of the Nations League, followed by the World Cup 2026 qualifiers scheduled throughout the year, Clarke will require players who can perform well in high-pressure matches.
McCowan’s experience at Celtic Park could make him an intriguing option - but whether he gets the nod when Clarke picks his next squad remains to be seen.
