From dead phone battery to resisting arrest charge after church break-in

A MAN who broke into and trashed an Adamstown church while drunk, then violently resisted arrest when police arrived at the scene, has been convicted and given a two-year good behaviour bond.

Magistrate Janine Lacy sentenced Jarrod James McKinnley in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday afternoon, after the court heard the 30-year-old broke into the Live Free Church at Adamstown on the evening of March 23, broke several pot plants and threw sheet music all over the place.

The court heard McKinnley told police he could not remember why he decided to break into the church, but he believed he was looking for somewhere to charge his phone.

Someone who saw him on the premises called police and when officers arrived, court documents say McKinnley put up "violent resistance" before the constable handcuffed and arrested him.

McKinnley was also fined $800.
