From Alnwick to Barcelona: Lucy Bronze signs for one of world's best women's teams

Northumberland-born footballer Lucy Bronze has joined one of the top teams in women’s football after signing a two-year deal with Barcelona.

The 30-year-old from Alnwick left Manchester City this summer and joins the Primera Division winners, who won all 30 league games last season. The sister club of the famous Barcelona men’s team were Champions League winners in 2021 and runners-up this year.

Bronze has now played for some of the best teams in the world, after a career that saw her play initially for Sunderland has led to spells at Liverpool, Manchester City, Lyon. She also has 87 caps for England and was named the best female footballer in the world by FIFA in 2020.

Bronze grew up in north Northumberland, living on Lindisfarne, in Belford and in Alnwick. She was a pupil at Duchess High School in Alnwick.

She told the Barcelona website: “I’m very happy to play for a club like FC Barcelona, one of the biggest teams in the world. I really want to start working with the team. After a couple of conversations, you can’t say no to Barca.”
