Villagers in Keyworth say issues around speeding in the area are ‘frightening’ after Rushcliffe police carried out speed checks in the village. Officers recently conducted a speed check operation in Keyworth, resulting in more than 20 vehicles being stopped for offences such as speeding and using a mobile phone whilst driving.
Residents have shared their concerns over the issue and say it’s mainly on the stretches of roads which lead motorists in and out of the village. Jim Bywater, who is retired, said he has previously seen these checks being carried out in the past and thinks speed bumps would be a benefit to the area.
The 57-year-old said: “It does sound like a lot, I am aware of it and it’s frightening. I’ve seen things on Spotted Keyworth asking if speed bumps can be put in which I think it would be great. It’s Nottingham Road, and I’ve seen the police outside the school before, out with a speeding gun. Nottingham Road going through Plumtree is quite a fast road between Keyworth and Plumtree.

He added: “I feel it’s safe overall. I moved here from Beeston because of the low crime rates and I didn’t think there was a lot of speeding, but the statistics say otherwise. It seems to be well behaved, the people tend to be well behaved.”
Local resident Katie Sandoval said: “I would say people speed on Wolds Drive, Selby Lane and Nicker Hill - those [roads] are the outer perimeter. The thing is Wolds Drive has a school on it, it’s a long road. There's definitely speeding down Selby Lane, and you know there’s a lot of elderly people here and children so it’s not good. And horses; there’s farms around here and horses are occasionally on the road. I would say it’s the long stretches that lead in and out of the village. Katie added: “There’s always issues with parking, the bottleneck for parking is by the schools.”
Andy Gordon, 53, said he has noticed parking and congestion has become more of an issue rather than speeding.
The statistician said: “To be honest, I didn’t think speeding was a problem. Since the population is growing I noticed that down and around Nottingham Road, where the school is, it’s really buttoned up. Rather than there being speeding issues, it’s more congestion. It’s easy going down Selby Lane. But in all honesty I haven’t noticed any issues with speed.
“The issue with speeding is more road safety, there are traffic issues here but it's congestion .It’s dangerous for children in particular between bunny lane and Nottingham Road.”
A spokesperson for Rushcliffe South Police said: “Op Reacher have been out today in Keyworth following complaints from local residents to address the issue of speeding vehicles in the village. Over 20 vehicles were stopped for offences including speeding, using a mobile phone whilst driving. We continue to address issues reported to us, so please be mindful of your speed and adhere to the posted speed limits.”
