High-speed rail project HS2 is set to launch the search for UK-based companies to help build its fleet of new trains.
In 2021, a joint venture between Hitachi and Alstom was awarded the £2 billion contract to build the high-speed trains at their factories in Derby, County Durham and Crewe.
The pair is now teaming up with HS2 to find new suppliers which can work on the interior fit out of 54 new trains which are set to run on phase one of the high-speed line between London and Birmingham within the next decade.
Later phases will connect Birmingham with Crewe, Manchester Airport and city centre and the East Midlands. HS2 said the project was already supporting around 30,000 jobs and so far 3,000 UK-based businesses had won work on it.
As contracts will vary in size, value and duration, HS2 said it was encouraging small businesses to seize the opportunity to break into a new sector and capitalise on the multimillion-pound opportunities.
The work includes elements such as exterior coating, fabrications, electrical cables and interior assemblies.
Chief commercial officer Ruth Todd said: "My advice to businesses of all sizes is to think outside of the box as these contract opportunities aren't limited to companies already working in the rail sector.
"If you're supplying storage solutions for motorhomes, windows for aeroplanes or internal panels for office buildings then we want to hear from you.
"These contracts present a real opportunity for growth over the next five years and we want to see more UK businesses thrive as a result of HS2's construction."
