Fresh plans for controversial demolition of Arnold chippy

New plans have been put forward for the controversial demolition of a family run chippy. The proposal for 135-141 Front Street in Arnold involves the creation of nine one or two-bedroom apartments as well as a ground level shop after the demolition of four existing high street units, two of which are currently occupied.

And now a new set of designs for the project, which have been altered with difference placements of windows and exterior fittings, have been submitted to Gedling Borough Council for consideration as the consultation period nears its end. As a result of these changes this consultation will now end on May 18.

The two businesses still trading at the premises', Blue Circles and the Front St Cafe, would have to move if plans progress. Bambos Charalambous, 50, the owner of Blue Circles Fish Bar, whose family have run the shop since 1990, previously told Nottinghamshire Live that he was "gutted" shortly after finding out about the plans.

Mr Charalambous added in March that he felt 'left in the dark' as he awaited a decision by the council. Gedling Borough confirmed the council had received revised layout plans which are available to view online and further public consultation has been undertaken, which will run until May 18.

After hearing of the plans to demolish the shopfronts on Front Street a petition was set up by locals to oppose them, which has reached more than 1,700 signatures. Staff at neighbouring business, the Front St Cafe, also questioned their future when they learnt of the plans in November 2021.

The application is currently pending consideration by Gedling Borough Council.
