Frenkie de Jong sparks Liverpool and Premier League transfer speculation after airport sighting

Reported Liverpool transfer target Frenkie de Jong has sparked further speculation over his future after arriving at an airport.

The Barcelona star has been linked as a potential target for the Reds in recent days, as they appear to step up their pursuit of a midfielder. Jurgen Klopp admitted last week that Liverpool may “go for a midfielder” before the transfer window closes.

De Jong has been one of the names linked with a move to Liverpool. Chelsea and Manchester United are the other two clubs who have been tipped to make a move this summer, with a £60m price tag being quoted in certain reports.

With speculation over his future appearing to ramp up, De Jong has been filmed arriving at Barcelona airport. According to Spanish news outlet El Chiringuito TV, De Jong is flying to London.

However, a further report from ESPN claims to have an explanation that may pour cold water on transfer hopes for any of the Premier League sides. They say that Barcelona have allowed their players to have a couple of days off, and that De Jong’s trip to London is not transfer related, with team-mate Memphis Depay also said to be accompanying him.

Further to this, a report in The Athletic , claims that De Jong looks set to stay at Barcelona this summer. They say that Chelsea are the only club who could potentially sign the midfielder, with a stay at the Nou Camp most probable - meaning a move to Liverpool appears unlikely at this stage.
