Frenkie de Jong responds to Wout Weghorst first goal for Manchester United

Frenkie de Jong was quick to praise Netherlands teammate Wout Weghorst after the striker scored his first goal for Manchester United in the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

The Reds took a commanding lead in the Carabao Cup semi-final tie, with Marcus Rashford, Weghorst and Bruno Fernandes all on target for Erik ten Hag's side at the City Ground. It was Rashford's 10th goal in his last 10 matches, while Weghorst was on the scoresheet for the first time since arriving at Old Trafford on loan.

The striker, who is on loan from Championship side Burnley, was praised for his hold-up play against Steve Cooper's side. He made it 2-0 to United just before the half-time break, reacting well to finish after Wayne Hennessey had saved Antony's initial effort.

After the match, Barcelona midfielder De Jong commented on Weghorst's Instagram post, with the Reds frontman having expressed his delight at opening his account for United.

De Jong - who was close to a move to United in the summer - commented a clapping emoji on the post, with former Reds man Daley Blind and current teammate Alejandro Garnacho also praising the striker.

Weghorst was quick to praise Casemiro and Antony for their involvement in his goal against Forest, lauding the Brazilian duo for their build-up play.

"It was only my third match, but of course, I'm happy to score and I'm happy to help the team," he told MUTV. "I also think it was an important moment, just before half-time, and it gave us a way better feeling because, to be honest, the first half was not how we wanted it, so it was a good moment [to score]. It was a good attack on the right side.

"It was Casemiro, I think, who played it to Antony, and he hit the shot well. When I saw the high bouncing ball, I went straight for the rebound and it came exactly how I hoped in front of my feet."
