French rugby player Melvyn Jaminet has left the team’s tour of Argentina after being suspended for using a racist remark in a video posted on his social media accounts. The 25-year-old player made a racial and violent slur towards Arabs in a now-deleted post that circulated widely on social media.
The French Rugby Federation (FFR) swiftly condemned Jaminet's comments, stating that they are 'totally unacceptable' and do not align with the sport's core values. As a result, Jaminet has been suspended from the tour and has left the French team in Argentina.
The FFR emphasized its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and secularism, asserting that discriminatory behavior has no place in French rugby. An internal investigation is underway to address the incident.
Jaminet issued an apology via his social media platform, expressing deep regret for his words and emphasizing that racism in all forms is unacceptable. He acknowledged the FFR's sanction and offered cooperation in resolving the matter.
At the club level, Jaminet plays for Toulon in France, which also condemned his remarks and initiated an investigation. The player has been a regular in the French national team since his debut in 2021.
During the last year's World Cup in France, Jaminet played a significant role, scoring two tries in the group stage matches. His performance, including a crucial try against New Zealand, earned him recognition.
Following the recent victory against Argentina, where Jaminet contributed with a penalty kick, the FFR announced the team's arrival in Argentina in late June. The French minister for sport, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, supported the FFR's decision, advocating for zero tolerance against racism.
