French President Emmanuel Macron has urged European clubs to release their players for the Paris Olympics men's football tournament this summer, with a particular focus on Real Madrid. This comes as France star Kylian Mbappé is reportedly set to join the Spanish giants at the end of his Paris Saint-Germain contract in June.
The men's Olympic tournament falls outside of FIFA's international windows, meaning clubs are not obligated to release their players to national teams. Additionally, it is an under-23 competition, allowing for three senior players in each squad.
The situation is further complicated by the timing of the men's European Championship, scheduled for June and July this year, just weeks before the Olympic football tournament kicks off.
Macron emphasized the importance of European clubs cooperating to ensure a successful event, stating, 'I think that European clubs need to play the game so that we can put on a great show.' When asked if his remarks were aimed at Real Madrid, Macron confirmed, 'Exactly. When I said European clubs, that is what I meant.'
Mbappé has expressed his desire to participate in the Olympics, but the final decision rests with his club. Sources indicate that Real Madrid is not permitting any of their players to compete in both the Olympics and Euro 2024, forcing individuals like Mbappé, Eduardo Camavinga, and Aurélien Tchouaméni to make a choice between the two tournaments.
Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann has also voiced his ambition to feature in the Games, stating that he will 'do everything' to be part of the event.
The men's Olympic football tournament is scheduled to commence on July 24, following the conclusion of the European Championship.
